Close to the Heart

Last night was so much fun. We went to our granddaughter’s second-grade concert, and she was absolutely the life of the party. She was that one child marching to her own beat — literally. Last night was so much fun.

We went to our granddaughter’s second-grade concert, and she was absolutely the life of the party. She was that one child marching to her own beat — literally. She laughed, she danced, she was overly dramatic… and she loved every minute of it.

But of course, an hour before the concert was a completely different story.

Her dress was itchy.
It hurt her arms.
Her tights were falling down.
Her shoes were too big.
Her sweater wouldn’t stay buttoned.
And her hair was awful (her words, not mine!).

Oh, to be seven again.

Coming home from work and walking into all of that stress while trying to get out the door quickly was a lot. I’ll admit — I had a little meltdown myself. But the moment the concert started, and we watched her being her wonderfully dramatic self on stage, all the stress melted away. We laughed so hard watching her. Every bit of frustration from earlier in the evening was completely forgotten.

And it made me think about how God must see us.

We have our moments. We get overwhelmed. We complain about the small things. We worry. We melt down. Yet God continues to love us through it all.

Sometimes I imagine that God must shake His head at us the way a parent does — not in frustration, but with a kind of loving understanding. After all, Jesus came into this world as a baby. He lived a human life. He experienced our emotions, our struggles, and our moments of joy.

He understands our humanity.

And then, later that night, my granddaughter insisted on sleeping next to me. We have a king-size bed, but if she had been any closer to me, she might have been on the other side of me. She wanted to be that close.

That made me think about something else.

Jesus longs for that same closeness with us. He invites us to draw near, to rest beside Him, to find comfort in His presence the way a child finds comfort beside someone they trust.

This week I’ve also continued my study of the book of Romans, and it has been such a beautiful reminder that God truly wants good for us. His grace, His love, and His patience are woven throughout every chapter. Even when we stumble, even when we have our human moments, His desire is always to draw us closer to Him.

Just like my granddaughter snuggling up as close as she could get, God invites us to come close to His heart.

And the closer we are to Him, the more peace we will find.

🙏 Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for loving us through our messy, human moments. Thank You for inviting us to come close to You and rest in Your presence. Help us remember that no matter how chaotic life feels, Your love remains steady and constant. Draw our hearts closer to Yours each day. Amen.

Thank you for pausing with me today and sharing in this week’s Moment of Devotion. I am so grateful for each of you.
